The Great Hall
Originally built as a church, the Great Hall held a significant role in Pittsburgh’s urban fabric as a place of gathering and community. Over time, with the changing needs of the city and its residents, the building was thoughtfully transformed into a contemporary office space for AMA Support Services — an organization dedicated to providing care, housing, and support for elderly individuals, people with disabilities, and patients in need.
The design draws inspiration from the building’s historic spirit of unity and support. Conceptually envisioned as an oasis — a source of peace, renewal, and refuge amidst life's challenges — the reimagined space creates a welcoming environment where visitors and employees alike can feel safe, valued, and connected.
At the heart of the space lies a bar, surrounded by greenery. Far more than a functional element, the bar serves as a vibrant center for gathering and social interaction. Just behind it, a community table offers a dedicated area where AMA Support Services team members can come together, share meals, and foster a spirit of solidarity. Together, the bar and community table establish a warm, communal atmosphere that embodies the organization’s core values.
Private offices and workspaces are positioned along the side wings, while a clear and inviting circulation system guides visitors through the building. The lower level has been designed as a flexible space to host training sessions, seminars, and community activities, supporting both the operational needs and the social mission of the organization.
Through this careful adaptive reuse, the Great Hall preserves its historic legacy while evolving into a contemporary sanctuary — not for worship, but for care, dignity, and human connection.
